Farewell, departure of participants
Our journey to Daugavpils began early in the morning on November 24 at 3.25 am. We took the bus St.Petersburg-Riga and then Riga-Daugavpils, all our journey took almost 10 hours and two buses. On arrival in Daugavpils at the bus station, we were pleased to see Valentina Garkule meeting us. We immediately bought the return tickets and hurried to our hotel, which turned out to be a five-minute walk from the bus station. We lived on the 5th floor in the hotel «LATGOLA PARK HOTEL DAUGAVPILS». This is a ten-storey hotel with a restaurant «Plaza» on the top floor, with a spacious lobby, a pool table and a cozy bar. Having relaxed after a long trip, we went to see the city center as our hotel was on the main square of the city, and of course we were looking forward to the arrival of delegations from Finland and Lithuania, who also had to live in the same hotel. |

On November 25 we were warmly met by the students, their teacher, Valentina, and the headmaster of Daugavpils Trade School, Jurijs Kuklis. This school hosted representatives of three Baltic countries – Estonia, Lithuania and Finland. We were impressed by the interesting excursion conducted by Valentina and her students. Thank you.
Have a look at some photos from that excursion made by our group.
From 11 to 12 o`clock all project delegations were welcomed in the Daugavpils City Council. We met the vice-mayor of Daugavpils Jānis Dukšinskis. First of all, all guests expressed great regret for the tragedy in Riga, which happened on 21st November. It was the third day of mourning and at 10 o`clock we took part in the moment of silence which was throughout Latvia in the memory of the dead and victims. |
From 12 o`clock to 1p.m. we participated in the master class of food preparation in Daugavpils Trade School. We cooked meals of traditional Latvian cuisine: vegetable soup, brown peas with bacon and a dessert. After getting a pleasant experience, we tasted these national dishes of Latvia. |

November 26, our second day of the project work, started early, at 9 am, as we went to Daugavpils fortress on foot.
From 10.00 to11.00 we had an excursion around the fortress. We got to know that the fortress is the symbol of Daugavpils and the only early 19th century fortress in Eastern Europe that has remained virtually unchanged. It occupies more than 150 hectares. The construction of this fortress began in 1810 by decree of Tsar Alexander I of Russia on the eve of the war with Napoleon I in order to strengthen the western border of the Russian Empire. In 1948-1993 years the fortress The fortress was home to the Daugavpils Higher School of Military Aircraft Engineerin. Zigzag line of fortifications is formed by a rampart with 8 bastions and other protective structures. On the left bank of the Daugava River there is a bridgehead. Each detail of the fortress was developed using the construction experience of the best architectural schools of Tsarist Russia and Europe. Inside the fortress was planned as a traditional military town: in the centre there was a parade ground, surrounded by blocks of administrative and residential buildings. All the facades of the buildings represent the Empire style, except Nicolas Gate and the water tower built in the Gothic style. Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre is situated in the Arsenal building at Daugavpils Fortress. It is the only place in Eastern Europe where the original masterpieces of the famous painter and the founder of the abstract expressionism can be seen. |

From 1p.m. to 3.45 we visited natural park "Daugavas loki", which is in the valley of the River Daugava. This place is unique because here in 1277 the Livonian Order Master, Ernest von Rassburg, built Dinaburga castle as a border fortress for protection against Lithuania. Near this castle was formed a settlement, which was a considerable trading place in XIII-XIV centuries. The history of Daugavpils began in that time. Castle existed from 1275 to 1577. Russian and Lithuanian captured and destroyed this castle many times, but Masters with enviable persistence repaired it. In 1577, Ivan the Terrible recaptured Dinaburg. Russian troops used the huge cannons, which could throw cannonballs weighing 20 pounds (320kg), made by the followers of Andrew Chokhov who made the King Cannon. Ivan the Terrible ordered to destroy Dinaburg to the ground and to begin the construction of a new fortress, as the old fortress prevented troops in campaigns against Riga. King's order of Dinaburg destruction was fulfilled and now its original foundation cannot be found. Having arrived at the local museum, we went with a guide to the model of the castle. Several- hundred- meter- tourist walking trail leads to this model. This trail starts near the bus parking, then descends 20 meters down. There is a wooden bridge over this place. Next, the trail goes along the slope and goes up the castle mountain. The descent from the castle hill to the Daugava is equipped with the wooden staircase.
